Dive Shop Turned Tapas and Wine Bar? Only in Playa del Carmen!
Known locally as Pepe Loco, Pepe Esteban came from Mexico City 11 years ago. All he knew was diving, and that is all he did, so it seemed appropriate that he open a dive shop. So Playa Dive Center came to fruition, but all good things come to an end to make way for better things, and Pepe decided to try his hand at the restaurant business.
He decided to stay in the same location and just do a major remodel, and over haul of the space, and he opened the doors of Tintos y Tapas just 2 short months ago. In my humble opinion he made a great choice, but (gasp!) I am not a diver, but I do oh so enjoy food! When the food started to come to the table everyone’s tongue started to water. Apple brandied shrimp, tuna croquette, tortilla de papa, steamed clams, shrimp stuffed mushrooms, and grilled pork all passed over our table, but they barely made impressions on the tablecloth as we devoured them with gusto. It was great to have small tastes of a variety of things as we sipped our wine, relaxed, and enjoyed cool conversation.
Tintos y Tapas is open from 12:00 to 12:00 everyday. They are located on 5th Avenue between 28th and 30th Street.
