A day in Playa without Sushi is like a day in Playa without the Beach. Are you crazy? But where do you go? Where are the cool places to get the best? Well, move over Playa, Sushi Tlan is here. Both locals and tourists are raving about the atmosphere, the quality, the taste, and the positive cosmo vibe.
Paulina Cordova, a bon-vivant originally from Guadalajara, came to Playa on vacation and, like most of us, just could not resist the temptation.
Actually, getting to our enchanted village had been filled with turns and twists. She lived in Cozumel for 6 years, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City. She worked for 16 years in the hotel management, timeshare, tourist development, for Punta Mita and Costa Banderas in Puerto Vallarta. “Phew, I have done some many things…..” Paulina exclaims.
On vacation from Mexico City in early 2003, her younger brother commented that this place was growing so fast and it would be great for someone to open up an avant garde Sushi bar. Boom! The light went on for Paulina – a moment of clarity!
“Sushi! That’s it!” she thought to herself.
So she signed a lease for a location in Playa on Jan. 2O, 2003 and flew to Guadalajara for training at her brothers Sushi Bar. She came back March 20th and began construction. “Unbelievable, we opened up to a flood a customers on April 26th 2003.” Paulina says with joy
After a few bumps and staff building, she built a first rate team of 9 and now has an outstanding consistent business. “My business grew with no advertising – just word of mouth. For 7 months, I did not even have a sign!” she says.
Paulina expresses proudly “So successful and fun is our business that we are now opening up a second bar. We are looking at April 26th, my lucky day. It will be on 5th Avenue in the Trendy Italian Section between 28th and 30th.”
“It will be the same size and with more lighting and details to cater to the even more upscale clientele expected. “This place is so cosmopolitan, it is really unbelievable” Paulina says. “I love it. I work 7 days a week and love making this adventure work well.”
According to Paulina, here business experience in Playa has been outstanding. “Oh, there are regulations and rules that we all must abide by and that is good. Truly, city officials and agencies have been so helpful to make sure that I get all the permits needed to run correctly.” She explains.
“Frankly, anyone can be successful in Playa. First you have to focus on your goal, what you want to do……….stay the course. In Playa, there is so much entertainment, so many options. I see so many that come here with big eyes and big dreams and then they lose it in the wind of the party. It is so easy. So, if you really want to make it in business here, you must stay centered on the plan. This is the only way.” Paulina says in an entrepreneural tone.
“For me, we do our very best to give the best sushi quality at a reasonable price with a great atmosphere. I am focused on my new location. After that, maybe Cozumel, Cancun, and Tulum. Who knows! And that is it! I am so happy!”
Sushi Tlan is located in the Corazon area on 14th in between 5th and 10th next door to the Hot Bakery and is open from 12 noon to 12pm – 7 days
