Once you get to Playa del Carmen, you can walk just about anywhere in the town. However, there are many other ways to get around town. Triciclos Triciclos, which are large tricycles, are all over the downtown and central area of Playa del Carmen. Occasionally you will get stuck behind one while driving on a major thoroughfare, but they are a great option to get around town in. You can find plenty of them around the ferry dock on the South end of town, as well as on Juarez and 5th Avenu where all the taxis hang out. When we were producing a print edition of Playa Maya News we would hire 3 of them to help us transport 4,000 copies onto the ferry bound for Cozumel. It was quite a site to see 3 triciclos. 4,000 papers, and one gringo perched on top hauling down the street to the ferry dock. Needless to say these guys have strong legs and will certainly get you where you need to go. They are great for getting papers, luggage or people around, and the prices do vary, but are inexpensive, so check it out! Taxi You will find Taxis just about anywhere. Just wave one down as you would anywhere. They are often clustered on 5th and Juarez, 5th and Constituyentes, all over 10th and near any large hotel or tourist destination. The rates are often posted at hotels. here is the most recent cab rates. For rates and info in Playa, see Playa Taxi Rates Collectivo Collectivo's are vans that run up and down 307 from Tulum to Playa del Carmen and Playa del Carmen to Cancun. You can also catch one in town to get from one end of town to the other. They are often air conditioned and extremely inexpensive. The collectivos run from Cancun to Playa del Carmen or Playa del Carmen to Tulum, and back. The cost is: (find in town price) - 40 pesos [Approximately $4.00 USD] from Playa del Carmen to Cancun [one way]
- 20 pesos [Approximately $2.00 USD] from Playa del Carmen to Tulum [one way]
- 5 pesos [Approximately 50 cents] between 38th Street and Juarez Avenue
The collectivos run every day of the week from 5AM to 10PM every 10 minutes or so. You can find them on Calle 2 between 10th and 15th Avenue, around town, and on the freeway. The rate is fixed, whatever distance you travel is the same cost. Car Rental There are numerous car rental agencies in the Riviera Maya. They have offices in every tourist zone, at Cancun Airport , Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, and Tulum. Ferry (check dock info) If you want to visit Cozumel, the most common method is to take the ferry across from one of the two docks in Playa. There is one near the plaza at the end of Juarez, and another at the end of Constituyentes. There are ticket booths located near each dock and on 5th Avenue. In Cozumel, you can purchase tickets at the ferry dock. The schedule is as follows: Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Ferry - Daily: 5:00am, 7:00am, 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, 9:00pm, 11:00pm Cozumel to Playa del Carmen Ferry - Daily 4:00am, 6:00am, 7:00am, 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:00am, 12:00am, 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 8:00pm, 10:00pm The times may change due to weather and ocean conditions. There are separate ferry companies that do the Cozumel run, though with the exception of one being slightly faster, they both offer the same amenities; snacks, sodas, and beers. They both have televisions, which may or may not be in operation. To our knowledge the ferries are never completely sold out (except the early morning rides because of workers going to Cozumel) so you can always get a seat. In Cozumel you buy a ticket at the dock where you board the ferry. Airport Transfers There are several ways to get to the Cancun airport; taxis, or the bus are both options, as well as an airport transfer in an air conditioned van. For airport transfer information see: Cancun Airport Transfers Scooters You can rent scooters at hotels, as well as some rental places on 10th Avenue. Keep in mind that the traffic in Playa del Carmen can be a bit crazy, and that there is a helmet law that you must abide by. Bicycles Many hotels offer bicycle rentals and you can find rental options all through town. A large portion of Fifth Avenue does not allow bikes in the afternoons and evenings, but there is a bike path that runs along 10th Avenue. Bus Many of the fascinating attractions located in the Riviera Maya are located off of highway 307 which runs parallel to the Caribbean Sea from Cancun to Chetumal. Busses run out of Playa del Carmen to virtually any destination in Mexico. Actually, busses run out of any 1st class bus station to any destination in Mexico. 2nd and 3rd class busses run on daily routes. A couple bus lines run busses up and down 307 all day, seven days a week. Buses coming from Cancun and places along the coast, such as Tulum, arrive at the Riviera bus station, at the corner of Juárez and 5th Avenue. Buses coming from inland or out of state arrive at the ADO station, on 20th Avenue between 12th and 14th streets. Taking the bus is an inexpensive and reliable means of getting around the Riviera Maya Schedule and ticket info: On-line Bus Schedules can be found here for the Yucatan and beyond.
