Cheap eats and cold beer, what could be better? A little over a year ago, a group of five friends from New York fell in love with Playa del Carmen. When the opportunity presented itself to open a business here, they jumped on it and bought the Hotel Santa Barbara on Calle 4. While busy working from the ground up to restore this little jewel to its original charm, they often dined at a little taco shop on 12th street that served amazing food, and thus discovered the chef-owner, Alejandro Azcue....
It was immediately apparent that Alex should be creating his special dishes in a more visible location, and what better place than the ground floor of the Hotel Santa Barbara! Alex and the hotel owners embarked on a mission to provide a place where locals could find fabulous food, a great atmosphere, and very reasonable prices. What was born was Carboncitos, one of the best taco shops in Playa del Carmen!  What makes Carboncitos so special? Is it the made- to- order guacamole or the icy cold beer in frosted mugs? Perhaps it is their Pastor, a key ingredient in many of the dishes served. Alex uses his abuelita's secret recipe to marinate the pork, then slowly charcoal roasts it on a spit right in the dining room. In addition, diners and drinkers can enjoy the state of the art sound system and watch their favorite sporting events on several large screen TV's. Where else by La Quinta can you and a date enjoy half a dozen succulent tacos and a couple of deliciously icy beers for under $100.00 pesos? This lovely taco shop is like a little habanero pepper; you can't tell just by looking, but when you try it, you'll experience the powerful flavor!
Carboncitos is truly bustling now, so they have added breakfast to the menu and, due to numerous requests, delivery service throughout the town as well.With the hotel an oasis of friendly charm and comfort and Carboncitos the haven for great food and great fun, the group decided that something equally exciting could happen. This is how the idea of a rooftop lounge came to life, on the roof with its spectacular view of the Caribbean Sea and Cozumel on one side and breathtaking sunsets on the other. Right now, construction is under way for Cielos, an Asian-themed rooftop lounge and bar. If Carboncitos and the Hotel Santa Barbara are any indication, we here in Playa del Carmen are in for something uniquely special. Carboncitos is located on Calle 4 between 5th and 10th.
